WordPress Standard Guidebook

WordPress標準ガイドブック

You may have heard already, but a new book on WordPress just came out in Japan. I wrote it with a help of WordPress Japan.

WordPress Standard Guidebook

  • Author: Naoko McCracken & WordPress Japan
  • Price: 2,980 yen + tax (approx. $35)
  • 344 pages (with CD-ROM)
  • ISBN4-8399-2169-5
  • Publisher: Mainichi Communications

The book talks about things like getting started with WordPress, setting up a local environment for development, customizing and creating a theme, and installing and making the best use of plugins.

I’d like to thank these theme & plugin authors for letting me include their work in my book. The book explains how to set up these theme/plugins, and includes required files in the CD-ROM.

New Theme for This Site

I FINALLY finished updating the design for this site!

(Note: This is a recaptured screenshot in Setp. 2011)

This is a completely original theme I made from scratch especially for this site, and sorry, I’m not planning on releasing as public theme. Of course, feel free to take a look at the sorce code and css – as long as you don’t use images or the “whole” code without attribution. If you are not sure, just ask.

You might wonder, “what’s with these garbela daisies all over the site?” Well, in fact it’s just my favorite kind of flower. I know this (“I just like it”) is pretty lame explaination for any kind of design work – but when it comes to a personal site, that could mean a lot. I’m trying to stick with a continous color choice (undertoned pink) along with garbela imagery to build a recognizable “brand” for this site.

After all, Apple gave apples a whole new meaning!

This is a list of plugins I started using with this new theme.

flickrRSS
For inserting Flickr images in the header section.
Feed List
For pulling del.cio.us on the index page.
monthchunks
For compact monthly archives list at the bottom of each page.

Speaking on WordPress in Tokyo

At this year’s SxSW, my friends Yasuhisa & Kazuhito hooked me up with Takano-san, who is giving me an opportunity to speak at Apple Store Ginza (Tokyo, Japan) in September.

Takano-san started organizing CSS Nite last October. It’s a monthly mini-workshop series designed for web developers who are interested in CSS (obviously) and web standards.

The title is not set yet, but it will be something like “Publishing a CSS-based site in 15 minutes with WordPress.” I want to introduce WordPress as a nice CMS tool (not just a blogware!).

The tipping point of WordPress hasn’t arrvied in Japan yet — Movable Type is still much more popular as far as self-installation blog goes (of coures, aside from blogger-type externally-hosted blog). I hope this year will be “it” for WP!

I will be speaking in Japanese, but feel free to stop by if you happen to be in Tokyo.

Sweet treats that are good for you

On this Valentine’s day, I ordered 2 bags of mini-cookies from Sun Flour Baking Company. I’ve fallen in love with them since I had one on American Airline flight to Japan last summer (I special-ordered vegan food).

Vegan cookies are a passion at Sun Flour. We love to create the best soft, dense, chewy vegan cookies in the world. Plus, they’re loaded with calcium!

No honey, dairy, eggs, fish or gelatin is used in Sun Flour BC’s cookies. They aren’t low-cal and they contain some saturated fat (you can view nutritional facts), but I can guarantee they are much better for you than Oleos…
